I would like to express what a privilege it has been to get to know the students, parents and staff of Moriah College, during my first semester as Principal. Spending time with our students has been a true joy – they are genuinely inquiring, curious and kind and we have so much to be proud of.
Term 2 has showcased engagement, enthusiasm, and a commitment to learning across each section of our College. From our youngest learners in the ELCs through to our senior High School students, everyone has contributed to a vibrant and dynamic learning environment that continues to inspire and nurture growth.
Our ongoing initiative to “Just say hello,” has continued apace. This simple act is helping us shift our culture towards greater kindness and inclusivity, reinforcing our positive community spirit.
Our youngest ELC learners have demonstrated an incredible love for learning. They celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut by transforming their classrooms into Israeli settings, explored farm animals with hands-on learning at Golden Ridge Farm, and participated in the Bunnerong gymnastics and Playball programs. Our school psychologists introduced mindfulness practices for our young learners, and our sustainability program led to the creation of a new herb garden, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.
In the Primary School, students excelled academically and in co-curricular activities, shining in inter-school competitions and earning accolades. The focus on reading fluency and comprehension in English has led to outstanding achievements. Students challenged themselves and peers in numerous sporting events, including cross country, track events, and a futsal tournament. Our Talent Quest and dance troupe added excitement and anticipation, with the latter preparing for a performance at the Sydney Opera House.
Shavuot was a key event in the Primary School, with the children celebrating the giving of the Torah. The Year 1 Siddur celebrations, where our youngest students received their first siddur, and the memorable Bat Mitzvah Shabbat dinner both highlighted significant milestones in our students’ Jewish journey.
Our High School students have immersed themselves in a variety of enriching experiences. Our debating teams have triumphed in numerous competitions, and our Mock Trial team has proven to be a formidable force. Highlights such as Enterprise Day, the Shavuot dinner, Adelaide Soccer Tour and work experience week are just a few examples of the diverse and impactful opportunities that have been available to our High School students.
Adding to these achievements, the Music Festival was a standout event in Term 2. The talent on display made us all proud, and the school and House spirit were second to none. The celebration of music continues at Music Camp, and we eagerly anticipate the exciting end-of-camp performance.
Leadership has very much been at the forefront. We congratulate the 18 students elected to represent our school on the Student Leadership Council (SLC) for 2024-2025. We are confident they will lead with humility, inclusivity, integrity, and passion, carrying forward the values of Moriah College with diligence and honour. The quality of all candidates for SLC was outstanding, reflecting a commendable dedication to making a positive impact.
At the same time, our enduring message to the College community is true leadership is not limited to serving on the SLC – it shines through in the everyday actions (some with very little or no fanfare) of students who show kindness, courage, and empathy, take initiative, strive for excellence, and contribute positively to our community.
Last week, we also saw the incredible Mikolot Semi-finals. Mikolot, the Moriah Foundation’s international public speaking competition, with participation from across the Jewish Day Schools, challenges our students to address fundamental questions about Judaism and Jewish life. This year, five Moriah participants delivered thought-provoking speeches which focused on our Jewish identity and drew from the Torah’s teachings about unity with the people of Israel. The manner in which our students prepared and delivered these talks, embodied the essence of leadership. I am pleased to share their speeches with you here.
Semester 1 reports will be shared with families soon, and we encourage parents to take the time to review these reports with their children. Engaging in constructive and productive conversations, praising accomplishments, and identifying areas for growth and progress are essential. This is a valuable opportunity to review, reflect, and set targets for the upcoming semester, ensuring that each student continues to thrive and excel.
Congratulations to all our students and staff on a successful term. We wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday, filled with rest and rejuvenation. We eagerly look forward to welcoming everyone back for the start of Term 3 on 23 July.
Please also save the date for 24 September, our Capital Appeal Major Event, which promises to be an incredible evening of unity and celebration for our entire community, as we plan for our future.
